A Silent Retreat – Getting away from it all!

by | Nov 7, 2021 | Moving Through Menopause Podcast, Podcasts

Getting away from it all definitely has its advantages and a silent retreat may not be your idea of a great getaway.  Perhaps t’s a luxury your budget doesn’t quite stretch to. What might you expect? and what are the benefits?

This episode I chat with Sune Markowitz-Schulman about her experience of what she thought was going to be a ‘silent retreat’ (More on that). A retreat is a wonderful opportunity to stop the clocks, turn off the technology and tune into what’s going on inside! How was it for her?

A New Normal

For many people Covid 19 has lefts it’s mark. This episode we reflect on how to live our best life after lockdown. What might that look like? Is mindfulness a part of the solution and how can we build more mindfulness into our modern everyday lives? Why not consider mindful walking or making some time for mindful meditation .

The father of modern mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn, defines mindfulness meditation as “the awareness that arises from paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment non-judgmentally”. He suggests that by focusing on the breath, we can cultivate attention on the body and mind moment to moment. What are the benefits of mindfulness?

The Benefits of Mindfulness

When we practice mindfulness we can positively influence how we see ourselves and our lives. It is generally accepted that mindfulness can:

  • help to relieve stress,
  • lower blood pressure,
  • reduce chronic pain,
  • improve sleep,
  • alleviate gastrointestinal difficulties and
  • improve your mental health.

Mindfulness is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as a way to prevent depression in people who have had 3 or more bouts of depression in the past. (See the NICE guideline on depression in adults.)
