A Triple Threat
Tina highlights the intricate connections between Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), menopause, anxiety, and diet. We delve into the physiological and psychological factors contributing to an increased incidence of IBS in women navigating Perimenopause and Post-Menopause.
How can Psychotherapy help IBS?
To be honest, the last place I think my IBS symptoms reside is in my mind! So I ask Tina “How can Psychotherapy help?”
Tina explains the importance of identifying your triggers and she doesn’t mean food triggers. Some situations and even certain people can exacerbate symptoms. Now that I think about it, I do worry quite a lot about how my ‘insides will behave’ in certain situations. I can see how this hypervigilance could exacerbate the situation.
Hormones Matter
Declining levels of Oestrogen and Progesterone can alter gut motility and influence the diversity of the gut microbiome. This goes some way to explain why 2/3 of IBS sufferers are Women with increasing numbers being diagnosed Post-Menopause.
IBS is not just about FOOD
Babies separated from their primary caregiver in their early days and babies delivered by caesarian section are more likely to have IBS, so it is an oversimplification to suggest it is simply food-related.
Treatment Approaches
One of the most important approaches to treating IBS is stress reduction. Stress management using CBT, hypnotherapy, mindfulness and meditation are all options to explore.
Lifestyle Approaches
- Regular Exercise: Aids digestion and stress reduction.
- Consistent Sleep Schedule: Poor sleep worsens IBS symptoms.
- Hydration: Essential for bowel regularity.
IBS is a complex problem and that calls for complex solutions, so embrace the power of psychotherapy to help IBS and you could be on the way to getting relief.
